Monitoring and Mapping of Traffic Noise and Air Pollution of Arterial Roads in Urban Areas :
A Decision-Assisting Framework for Impact Assessment and Mitigation Measures

Online Publishing: Web-Based and Interactive (WBI) noise and air pollution maps

The project (08-ENV61-4) outcomes are Significantly related to the Environmental Protection Program outcomes which are (1) Development of Technology/Technique to assess, monitor, and manage Environmental Pollution and (2) Development of Expertise. These indeed can not be achieved should the developed / generated noise and air-pollution maps of Al-Khobar city (the case study) are kept confined only to the final report or publications addressing only professionals in the area of study. The objective is to realize the project achievable and tangible outcome via online publishing of the generated maps of the case study in the form of interactive and informative online maps that can be accessed by the public for information viewing with respect to noise and air pollution patterns and magnitude as a result of traffic flow in the major roads in Al-Khobar city. Additionally such public publishing would also engage professionals in the process of decision-making utilizing state-of-the art technology of computer-aided graphical modeling, mapping and prediction of road traffic noise as well as air pollution levels. The maps can also be accessed and utilized by other concerned and decision-making authorities (e.g. other local municipalities of other cities in Saudi Arabia, traffic-management authorities, local environmental protection authorities, as well as the public) when objective assessment and remedial measures are found necessary and therefore assists the decision-making process for future urban developments within the city.
